Sustainable farming based on nature's principles provides premium quality.
Through over 25 years of research, spotted catfish has become one of the definite favorites of biologists and researchers. Its robustness, well-being in high density and utilization of input factors make it particularly well suited economically, but also in a class of its own as a sustainable aquaculture species.
The scaling up of Spotted Catfish farming is in line with the Norwegian authorities' desire to diversify the seafood sector and an important part of the country's future food exports.
About farming of Spotted Wolffish from a sustainability perspective
Proper water from the species' native habitat poses low technology risks.
As one of the few species, wolffish grow very well in cold water, and we can therefore use the flow of Arctic cold seawater with a naturally high content of oxygen, the right temperature and composition. The water is pumped up from the depths without the need for heating and cooling.
Well-being at high density
The wolffish is a very robust and social fish and it has a unique ability to live in large densities. This allows us to optimize the consumption of production factors such as electricity, area, water and more without adding unnecessary risk. By combining innovative technical solutions with optimal Arctic seawater, we experience finding the best growth conditions based on the fish's own terms.
From Red-listed wild fish to Premium farming's favorite
Spotted wolffish is red-listed in many countries and is at the same time a highly sought-after delicacy. By developing farming of the species, we take responsibility for its future in the sea, while at the same time experiencing that the quality of the final product is better than wild-caught fish.
Nutrient content and utilization
The utilization rate when filleting (53-55% fillets) of the fish is very good and the nutrient content is well balanced in relation to market demand with, among other things, a high content of B12, protein and balanced fat content.
Growth factors
With a feed factor below 1 (down to 0.7), Spotted wolffish is one of the fish species with the best conditions for sustainable food production. The use of floating feed combined with low water levels gives the fish the best possible living conditions and less energy consumption.
Denvo uses feed with the right nutritional content and thus a high utilization rate. Together with researchers and feed producers, we are continuously working to optimize this in relation to the fish's different growth life stages through the project: Wolfhunger.
Logistics solutions
The development of logistics solutions is done continuously and Denvo is involved in several projects with the aim of increasing shelf life and freshness, as well as lowering the weight of ice and unnecessary packaging. Unlike many other species, spotted wolffish has a composition that gives it naturally better durability.
We want to take national responsibility for building expertise for the future while ensuring a solid workforce in the future.
